You will have seen QR codes around. In magazines, on bill boards and even on your favourite cereal box. You have probably wondered what you are supposed to do when you see these funny litte images called QR codes. What exactly do they mean?

A QR code is a 2D barcode that is used to store and transmit data. A QR code can hold information for a picture, a website, a number, sound or music.

QR stands for quick response. QR codes can be scanned by your smartphone to get information quickly. They are inexpensive, easy to make and can save us a lot of time.

What do QR codes look like?

Look at the QR code below. QR codes are made up of black and white squares. You see them on all sorts of things – books, boxes, signs and even shoes!​​​​​​​ Take a look around you, see if you can find one.

Denso Wave Inc (a company in Japan) invented the QR code in 1994. They were used to scan car parts and to make things quicker and easier.
